Simple Ways to Teach Empathy in Early Childhood

Teaching empathy in early childhood helps children build kindness, respect, and strong relationships. When young children learn to notice and care about the feelings of others, they grow into compassionate friends and thoughtful learners. At FLOE Academy, we believe that empathy is not only taught in lessons but also modeled in daily interactions at home, school, and in the community. Through our early childhood programs, children are guided in age-appropriate ways to understand emotions, practice kindness, and build connections that last a lifetime.

Model Empathy Every Day

Children learn best by watching the adults around them. When you show kindness in small ways, such as holding the door for someone, listening with patience, or offering help, children notice and copy that behavior.

Try to:

  • Share your own feelings in simple words: “I feel happy when you give me a hug.”
  • Point out kind actions when you see them.
  • Use calm and respectful language, even during stressful moments.

These everyday examples show children how empathy looks in real life and help them understand that caring for others is part of daily living.

Use Books and Stories to Build Understanding

Stories are powerful tools for teaching empathy in early childhood. Choose books that show characters experiencing different feelings or facing challenges.

While reading together, pause to ask questions like:

  • “How do you think he feels right now?”
  • “What would you do if you were her friend?”
  • “Why do you think he made that choice?”

These conversations encourage children to think beyond themselves and connect with the emotions of others. Over time, children learn that everyone’s experiences are valuable and deserve care.

Encourage Acts of Kindness

Simple acts of kindness are wonderful ways for children to practice empathy. Encourage them to:

  • Draw a picture for a friend.
  • Help set the table at home.
  • Check on a classmate who looks sad.

Celebrate their efforts, no matter how small. When children see that kindness makes others feel better, they begin to understand the power of empathy. Over time, these small acts build a foundation for a caring heart and a supportive community.
