Have you ever noticed how proud a preschooler feels after helping set the table or picking up toys without being asked? Young children naturally enjoy lending a hand, and those small moments can become valuable lessons about kindness, empathy, and responsibility.
Be Kind to Humankind Week, celebrated from August 25 to 31, is a wonderful opportunity to encourage simple acts of kindness that children can practice every day.
Challenge 1: Be a classroom helper
Invite your child to help with simple tasks like putting books back on the shelf, passing out supplies, or cleaning up after an activity. Helping others teaches children that kindness is shown through actions, not just words.
Even at home, small responsibilities like feeding a pet or watering plants help children understand the value of contributing to their family.
Challenge 2: Use kind words
Encourage your child to say “please,” “thank you,” and “you’re welcome” throughout the day. Greeting friends with a smile or offering a compliment can also brighten someone’s day.
These everyday conversations are great opportunities to practice respectful communication while building positive relationships with others.
Challenge 3: Share and take turns
Waiting patiently isn’t always easy for young children, but learning to share toys and give friends a chance to participate helps everyone feel included.
Simple games and cooperative activities provide natural opportunities for taking turns, helping children develop patience while having fun together.

Challenge 4: Make someone smile
Kindness also means recognizing when someone needs support. Encourage your child to be comfortable asking for help when they need it and to offer help when a friend or classmate is struggling. These small moments teach children that caring for others goes both ways.
Challenge 5: Notice acts of kindness
At the end of the day, ask your child, “What kind thing did you do today?” or “Did someone do something kind for you?” Talking about these moments helps children recognize kindness in themselves and others.
Growing kind hearts every day
Kindness isn’t learned in a single lesson. It grows through everyday experiences, thoughtful conversations, and positive examples from the adults children admire.
At FLOE Academy, we encourage children to care for one another, celebrate helpful choices, and discover that even the smallest act of kindness can make someone’s day a little brighter.
