Life moves quickly, even for young children. Between school, playtime, family activities, and learning new skills, toddlers and preschoolers can sometimes feel overwhelmed without knowing how to express it. Taking a few quiet moments throughout the day can help children slow down, relax, and reset.
In celebration of National Wellness Month, August is the perfect time to introduce simple mindfulness activities that support your child’s emotional well-being.
Take a balloon breath
One of the easiest mindfulness exercises is “balloon breathing.” Ask your child to imagine their belly is a balloon. As they breathe in through their nose, the balloon fills with air. As they slowly breathe out, the balloon gently deflates.
This playful activity helps children calm their bodies and can be especially helpful when managing big feelings after a frustrating or exciting moment.
Notice the world around you
Mindfulness doesn’t always mean sitting still. During a walk outside or while playing in the yard, invite your child to notice five things they can see, four things they can hear, or something they can smell.
Simple observation activities encourage children to stay present while turning everyday moments into opportunities for discovery.
Stretch and move
Young children often relax more easily through movement than by sitting quietly. Gentle stretching, pretending to be different animals, or following a simple yoga pose can help release extra energy while improving body awareness.
These activities pair well with indoor movement activities, giving children healthy ways to stay active while learning how movement can also bring a sense of calm.

Create a quiet corner
A cozy space with books, soft pillows, stuffed animals, or calming sensory items can become a comforting place when children need a break. A quiet corner isn’t a punishment. Instead, it gives children a safe place to relax, read, or simply take a few deep breaths before returning to play.
Practice together
Children learn by watching the adults around them. When parents and caregivers pause to breathe deeply, stretch, or enjoy a quiet moment together, children begin to see mindfulness as a normal part of everyday life.
The goal isn’t to create perfect calm. It’s to give children simple tools they can use to recognize their emotions, regain focus, and feel more secure as they grow.
At FLOE Academy, we believe emotional wellness grows through everyday experiences that help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
