Is My Child Ready for Kindergarten? A FLOE Readiness Checklist

The first day of kindergarten is an exciting milestone, but it often comes with one big question for parents. Is my child really ready?

The good news is that kindergarten readiness is about much more than knowing the alphabet or counting to 100. It includes social, emotional, physical, and communication skills that help children feel confident in a classroom setting.

In recognition of Get Ready for Kindergarten Month, here is a simple checklist to help you see how your child is developing before the school year begins.

Can your child follow simple directions?

Kindergarten teachers often give two or three-step directions throughout the day.

For example, can your child:

• Put away their backpack.
• Wash their hands.
• Sit down for circle time.

Being able to listen and follow directions helps children adjust more easily to classroom routines.

Can they communicate their needs?

Children do not need to speak perfectly, but they should be able to express basic needs and feelings.

Ask yourself if your child can:

• Ask for help.
• Tell an adult when something is wrong.
• Share ideas during conversations.
• Answer simple questions.

These communication skills help children build friendships and participate in classroom activities.

Are their self-help skills developing?

Independence plays an important role in kindergarten success.

Many children are ready to:

• Wash and dry their hands.
• Use the restroom with little assistance.
• Open lunch containers.
• Put on a jacket.
• Clean up after activities.

Practicing these everyday tasks at home helps children gain confidence.

Are they developing fine motor skills?

Kindergarten includes plenty of writing, drawing, cutting, and hands-on activities.

Your child does not need perfect handwriting, but strengthening fine motor skills through coloring, puzzles, building blocks, and child-safe scissors can make classroom activities easier and more enjoyable.

Do they enjoy books and learning?

Children who look forward to story time often arrive at kindergarten with stronger listening and communication abilities. Looking at pictures, asking questions, and talking about the characters encourage children to participate in the story while expanding their vocabulary. Whether it’s a favorite bedtime book or a new library find, these shared reading experiences help children become more confident and engaged learners. 

Every child grows at their own pace

No child enters kindergarten with every skill mastered, and that’s perfectly okay. Readiness is about steady growth, confidence, and a willingness to learn rather than perfection.
