How We Talk About and Support Autistic Children at FLOE

One thing that sets FLOE Academy apart is how we speak about and support autistic children. We know language matters. That’s why we take the time to learn what families prefer—whether it’s “autistic child” or “child with autism.”

Some of our families feel strongly about using identity-first language, and others prefer person-first. We respect both. What matters most is that we recognize the whole child, not just a diagnosis.

You also won’t hear us use terms like “high functioning” or “low functioning.” Instead, we talk about support needs. Why? Because every child is different. One child might need help during transitions. Another might need visual supports or a quiet space. And that’s okay. Our teachers are trained to recognize these needs and respond with care.

We also avoid using ableist language. We don’t talk about kids in terms of deficits or disorders. We talk about what they need to succeed. For some children, that means extra time to settle in. For others, it might mean using pictures or technology to communicate. We see all of these as valid forms of expression.

Here in our Nashville preschool, our mission is to support, not to change, children. We help them grow in confidence, build friendships, and feel a true sense of belonging.
